I’ll admit it, I’m not a super crafty gal, but I delight in seeing a space with subtle touches of personality that reflect its owners. How you combine pieces, both bought and made, and add your touch tastefully truly transforms a house into a home. And that’s exactly what Brittany and Jade Robertson did so well in their small-town Canadian home.
When interior designer and Brittany and husband Jade were house-hunting for a home for their two daughters and sister-in-law, Brittany had only three must-haves on her list: a space big enough for the family, a white kitchen and a soaker tub, naturally. So when they found this unfinished, modified bi-level nestled in a family-friendly neighborhood within Alberta’s Grande Prairie, Brittany saw a blank canvas. She jumped at the opportunity to work closely with developer Robyn from to complete the house, crafting it with all of the details and finishes she had always dreamed of.
Since they moved in just over two years ago, Brittany has touched every corner of the home and infused her style into anything and everything she could get her hands on. She’s the queen of spray paint and has truly mastered the delicate art of tasteful DIY, describing her style as “rustic cottage with a touch of glam.” One thing Brittany and I have in common is choosing neutrals for our walls and large furniture pieces, opting instead to add color and personality with decor elements such as throw pillows, art, rugs, plants and accessories. No shelf, nor wall, nor corner is without a quirky, fun piece in her bright and modern cottage-chic nest. – Sabrina

Images above: Brittany added her personal touch to every space in the home, even on the front porch. With a can of white glossy spray paint, an old, red bench was transformed. Paired with an indoor/outdoor side table, plants, pillows from and rubber boots, the seating area is the perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee.

The bedside light fixtures were the first items Brittany and her husband purchased, which contrast beautifully against their grey velvet headboard that they made themselves. “We love how it turned out,” says Brittany, “I love how much more something means to you when you made it yourself.”

Images above: Brittany doesn’t like to take her style too seriously; there’s always room for fun and flexibility in her home. She loves “grown-up spaces with tiny pieces of quirkiness,” and enjoys rearranging furniture, spray painting items and changing spaces up from time to time.

A painted rabbit plate and plants warm up the room and nod to Brittany’s style – and her love for rabbits. “I have quite a few rabbit accessories throughout our home. Jade’s grandma used to collect rabbits and somewhere along the way we were given the nickname Rabbitsons instead of Robertsons…and somehow they made their way into our house.”
