Before & After: A Dated Bedroom Becomes A Modern Retreat for Family

by Rebekah Carey

When Jenny and Adam were expecting their second daughter, Teddi, they decided it was finally time to turn their neglected master bedroom into an oasis that was stylish for adults, and kid-safe for their new addition and their older daughter, Charlotte. Jenny is a publicist and Adam works in television development, so having a room that the couple (and family) could retreat to after a long day was a necessity. The family enlisted the help of Dee Murphy, of , to create a more sophisticated space in their Los Angeles, CA home. Dee wanted to make their gorgeous new bed (their old one was left behind by the previous homeowners) the focal point of the room. She also replaced the tired light blue paint — which Jenny and Adam admit was a rushed paint job — with a classic navy blue from Benjamin Moore. The rest of the home features vintage and mid-century pieces, so Dee continued that aesthetic into the bedroom for a cohesive look. The pink Consort Design chair in the corner is both beautiful and also the perfect place for mom and baby to rest or read.

Now, not only does the couple have a bedroom that feels adult, stylish, and reflects the rest of their home, but their daughters Charlotte and Teddi have a place where they’re more than welcome to share family time outside of the main living areas. Thank you Jenny and Adam for sharing your gorgeous bedroom makeover, and give those sweet girls a squeeze for us!

Image above: Jenny and Adam felt like the rest of their house was fairly stylish, but their bedroom was, “nothing short of an embarrassment.” Jenny said of their goal, “We sought to turn the bedroom into a sophisticated yet kid-friendly space where we could relax and unwind both as a couple and a family.”

“Waking up to this beautifully appointed space every morning has been a dream come true. It has made such a difference to be able to start and end the day in such a room that actually reflects our style and fits with the rest of the house,” Jenny admits.

The “after” of the couple’s room is a happy place to retreat to at any point of the day, instead of a solely utilitarian space as it had been before.

It’s hard to believe that this credenza wasn’t the original choice for Jenny and Adam’s room. The initial one they picked out was all ready to come into the space, but ended up getting stuck in the stairwell on the way up. The delivery team turned around, then Adam and Jenny got a piece they loved even more, and as a result, the couple now keeps their stairway dimensions with them in their wallets!

The closet framing made for a somewhat awkward area to decorate. Luckily Dee added useful items like the chair and mirror and details such as the hanging pieces to create a more useful space.

  • i found the original blue – how was it described “tired light blue paint”? very soothing. naturally, i don’t live in LA (thank goodness) and my home – merely an apt – is my oasis since I am disabled and don’t get out much thanks to the gob smacking heat and medical issues. My friend painted one wall a light blue (i forgot the exact name – from Yolo Paints, Oregon). Every time I look at the wall, i smile and feel happy. glad i’m merely a boring woman who likes tired light blue paint.

  • I wish this were my master bedroom! I love all of the pieces and how everything came together. Such a beautiful room.

  • Thank you for the feature Design *Droits-Humains! This was one of my most favorite rooms for one of my most favorite families! I’m so happy to have created such a cozy retreat for them!

  • What a transformation! The sum of all parts coalesces into a beautifully appointed MBR that oozes style while retaining a relaxed aura. I love that the owners asked for a retreat they could enjoy with, not away from, their children. The designer listened and knocked it out if the park. The “after” room is a good example of why we mere mortals owe it to ourselves to involve a talented designer in our home reno projects.

    • Elizabeth! Thank you so much for this glowing review! You made my day! Happy to hear that in this era of DIY’ers and Pinterest aficionados … the talents of interior designers are still sought after and acknowledged. Thank you, thank you!
