Moving Day Tips + Ways To Plan To Eliminate Stress

Whether you’re moving yourself or hiring someone to help, moving costs and stress can add up quickly. From boxes and packing materials to truck rentals and snacks for your helpers, what seems like a few dollars here and there can add up and create even more stress than just preparing to move. Today we’re teaming up with Travelers to share some tips for turning any move into a less stressful and costly experience. From tips on what to focus on each week to prepping a “First Night” kit, these ideas will hopefully save you a few dollars and provide a lot of peace of mind. Now onto some inspiring interiors and prep tips to get you excited about making your new space home!

Reduce: When you’re thinking about moving (or it’s already on the calendar), take advantage of the excitement and momentum and pare things down. Consider a yard sale or listing some more valuable items on an online auction site to help raise funds for your move or setting up your new home. Most cities and towns have charities that would love to have your gently used clothing, electronics or household goods, so consider passing those on to those in need if you don’t think you’ll use them in your new home. Think about where it will go in your new space – if you can’t imagine how you’ll use it there, it’s time to sell, donate or toss. Color Code: Using inexpensive colored tape to mark boxes can eliminate the stress of trying to read handwriting during an exhausting time. You won’t miss neon yellow tape from a distance. Keep your boxes color-coded by room so that you can hang a chart up that visually tells you what color to look for when you need a specific item. Image above: Alethea’s home

Shirts and Towels Instead of Bubble Wrap: Rolls and rolls of bubble wrap can be expensive and finding piles of newspaper these days can take time. Consider packing ceramics, glassware and dishes in towels, sheets and t-shirts. It’s not as neat as freshly cut sheets of bubble wrap, but it’s free, does the job and it doubles up on something you already needed to pack anyway. Just be sure that anything fragile has a layer of shirt/towel/sheet on the bottom and top to protect it from any rough landings. Image above: Amy’s home

Save Some Money: Inviting friends and family to help you start a new chapter of your life by a moving party is a great way to save money on expensive movers and the perfect way to infuse your new home with love and laughter. A few takeout pizzas and cold drinks is a lot less expensive than most moving services. Image above: Marianne’s Suitcase DIY

Save Some Time: Pack clothes with the hangers still on in small portable containers like trunks or night stands You’ll not only save money on boxes, but when wrapped in a non-scented trash bag you’ll be able to get them unpacked, on the rack and airing out faster.

Plan For Your First Night: Make sure you pack a suitcase and a box with some bathroom & kitchen essentials (think coffee and toilet paper). You’ll avoid the stress of the avoid the “Where did I pack that?” blues the next day and ease into your new surroundings with comfort and caffeine. If you’re a pet owner, be sure to pack the same first night kit for your pets. A familiar toy, blanket or food bowl will help your pet acclimate to their new surrounding too!   • A tip for finding newsprint….your local library. Let them know in advance and they will gladly give you old newspapers. Most libraries only keep a couple of months of each newspaper and then toss them.

  • After having two miscarriages , my doctor informed me that stress was a huge factor to take into account. I had to do various exercises (breathing) just to get it under control. Thank you for this article. x

  • Recycle! There is a Yahoo group, and I’m sure there are many others) called Freecycle. You can sign up for the one in your area. If you have something to donate that might require a little fi and you might not feel comfortable giving it to a charity, just post it and other people that want it will come pick it up. Even in my rural county there are plenty of members. It has saved me trips to the dump and keeps my junk out of the landfills.

  • To feed all my family and friends who showed up to help me move (17 people!), my mom volunteered to cookea meal in the crockpot (sloppy joes) to keep it warm until we were ready to eat…and provided some side dishes, beverages, and a dessert. Cheaper than pizza and super easy.

    *I chose three words to define my move ahead of time: simple, organized, and quick.
    *I packed as much as I could and cleared rooms, putting all packed boxes in the foyer – close to the door so volunteers could easily grab boxes to put in their cars and trucks.
    *I had a go-to basket of moving essentials – tape, scissors, markers, etc. so that my moving supplies never got lost.
    *I kept a spreadsheet of all the offers from friends and family to help out where they felt best suited… one friend was my organizer/point person at the new place -directing boxes to the right rooms and setting up my entire kitchen. another friend helped me do my final clean of the old place; another made the dessert and side dishes we all enjoyed; another friend gave me moving boxes.
    *The move was simple, organized and quick. It’s the only time I’ve moved that people have asked me to for sure call them when I move again because it was so easy for them to help me.
    *Within an hour of my move in to the new place, all the rooms were set up and it looked like I’d lived there for months. Friends who know their strengths and weaknesses can really help in areas they excel in. Made the whole morning easier!
    *We finished so quickly that we spent the rest of the day having a game day and rela – treating it more like a party!

    I wish I’d followed your advice to pack clothes on the hangers. That would have saved me a lot of time!
